St. Joseph Theological Institute Admission Online 2025: Academic Year
The St. Joseph’s Theological Institute academic year consists of two semesters and four terms. The first semester runs from February to June, and the second semester from the end of July to the end of November. The semester consists of 16 weeks; 13 weeks of lectures, a one-week study break, and two weeks of examinations, including at least two days of supplementary examinations.
The first term is the period from the start of the academic year which is the end of January/beginning of February to Easter time, and the second term runs from soon after Easter to June. These two terms make up the second semester.
The academic year consists of 32 weeks of lectures, assignments, study breaks, and examinations, all of which is given over two semesters. Examinations are held at the end of each semester, beginning a week after lectures have ended. One-week study break before the end of each semester is allowed for preparation for examinations.

Bachelor of Arts in Human and Social Development
The Bachelor of Arts in Human and Social Development is a 3-year programme designed to enable students to grow in personal and social awareness and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to analyse social situations and to facilitate communities in their search for personal and social well-being.
The programme is built on the assumption that personal awareness and self-knowledge are the basis on which maturity and social consciousness are founded. The programme also examines the mechanics and processes of development in the context of the modern world and some of the theories of human, social, economic and political development and the barriers that hinder such growth.
The programme targets students who are preparing for work in the public sector, non-governmental organisations and private institutions as development practitioners. It also targets students who are interested in developing their academic careers in the field of development studies.
Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy
The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy is a 3-year programme which introduces students to the Academic Study of Philosophy. The first two years, in addition to providing a foundation for further philosophical studies, also meet one of the requirements for admission to theological training leading to priestly ordination in the Catholic Tradition. The final year introduces students to some current philosophical trends in African, Analytical and Continental philosophical traditions. Students also are given introductory preparation for post-graduate studies through Philosophy Seminars.
Bachelor of Arts in Theology
This is a 3-year foundational programme designed for students preparing for non-ordained ministry in the Catholic Church. It also serves as a foundation for graduate studies in Theology and cognate fields. Upon completing this programme, students preparing for ordained ministry in the Catholic Church will complete the canonical requirements for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Theology. Students registering for the Bachelor of Arts in Theology must have proficiency in English and have obtained a Senior Matriculation Exemption or its equivalent (with a minimum of 21 points).
Post-Graduate Diploma in Theology
This is a one-year programme focused on providing candidates for ministry with the knowledge and skills required to perform their pastoral duties professionally, ethically and efficiently. In addition to the theological training and pastoral skills which are the main focus of the programme, it also provides students with research training that is relevant to fulfilling the prerequisites for admission to Masters programs in Theology and Ministry.
Students preparing for priestly ordination in the Catholic Church must, in addition to having a degree in Theology, provide proof of having completed at least two years Of philosophical studies.
Admission Requirements
Upon application, original or certified documentary proof of previous studies must be provided together with the student enrolment contract.
Degree Programmes
Applicants for Degree programmes must meet the minimum requirements, which are:
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by UMALUSI, Senior Certificate or equivalent (especially for students from outside of South Africa).
- The NSC/SC should have a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50%-59%) or better in four subjects.
- The student must have obtained at least 40% in English, which is the medium of instruction in the Institute.
- All students must undergo and pass adequately an English proficiency test equivalent to TOEFL Intermediate or Pitman Intermediate.
Post-Graduate Diploma Programme
The Post Graduate Diploma in Theology requires a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent in Theology or some related field. Students who are preparing for ordained ministry in the Catholic Church must, in addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, have completed at least two years of Philosophical studies.
The Exemptions Committee shall consider on a case-by-case basis the situation of those applicants with equivalent or non-South African qualifications and offer further guidance following the Institute’s RPL Policy and Procedures and other applicable regulations from relevant agencies of State as these relate specifically to Higher Education.
- Marks for students from other countries will be converted to a comparable scale.
- For those who do not meet the above requirements, an entrance examination may be required.
- Exceptions that may arise will be determined on an individual basis by the Exemptions Committee.
- Students who are not supported by sponsors are considered private students. Their enrolment must first be approved by the Academic Dean. They should then submit their admission letter to the register for some other necessary enrollments.
